Participant Stories
Judy visited the Waterloo Office and met with Career Planner Joanie Gruver. Having previously worked as an administrative assistant, Judy was eager to continue in a similar role. She sought assistance the very day she was let go from her previous job. Joanie referred her to a position at the City of Evansdale Water Works Department, advertised on the job board in the welcoming area. Judy submitted her resume while still at the office and promptly received a call for an interview scheduled that same day at 5 PM. She was then invited for an in-person interview over the weekend, and by the following Wednesday, she was hired for the position. Judy shared, “I had a new job in only five days! If it hadn’t been for Joanie telling me about the position, I wouldn’t have known about it. I am forever grateful to her!”
A participant, who spent 8 years in the Marines and 35 years with a federal agency in and around Washington, DC, had been struggling since he had decided to leave the Beltway and move to Cresco, IA and felt as though he was at rock bottom. With an integrated resource team of Home Base Iowa, JVSG in three different offices, Wagner-Peyser in the Dubuque and Decorah offices, and the Howard County Economic Development office, Lawrence was coached and counseled on his resume, interviewing tips, proper attire and general interview and job search etiquette. After two months “on the hunt”, Lawrence was offered a great job as a Buyer/Planner for a major NASCAR trailer manufacturer.
